What we collect and why
Location (precise and background)
Why To notice when you arrive at and leave a participating venue, which is the core feature, and to count how many people who saw an offer actually visited.
How Your phone's built-in, battery-friendly geofencing reacts to "entered" and "left" events for a small list of venues. The app sends us only which venue, whether you entered or left, and when. It never sends your coordinates. When you pull to refresh, the app reads your position once to show walking times, and that reading stays on your phone.
Anonymous device ID
Why To keep your visits, saves and plans together without knowing who you are.
How A random ID created the first time you open the app, plus a random key for this install so that only your phone can send its own visits. We store only a scrambled (hashed) copy of that key.
Account details (only if you sign in)
Why To sign you in and keep your history across phones. Signing in moves your anonymous history onto your account.
How Your name, email address and profile picture as shared by Google or Apple, plus the sign-in session, including the IP address and device or browser details it was created from. Apple may give us a private relay address instead of your real email.
App activity
Why To run the features you use (saves, plans, votes, your visit stamps) and to understand which features are useful.
How Screens viewed, offers seen and saved, visits, plans and plan votes, stored in our backend (Convex) against your anonymous ID or account.
Crowd checks ("How's the vibe?")
Why To show everyone how busy a venue is right now.
How Your answer is stored against your anonymous ID or account. Other people only ever see a combined, anonymous crowd level for the venue.
Notification details
Why To deliver the notifications you've turned on, at sensible local times.
How Your phone's push token, which notification types you've turned on, and your time zone offset.
Feedback and bug reports (only if you send them)
Why To read your ideas and fix the problems you report.
How What you write, an optional screenshot, your app version, phone model, OS version and the screen you were on, and identifiers that link the report to the matching diagnostic session.
Analytics and diagnostics
Why To fix crashes and make background detection more reliable.
How Product analytics, crash reports and session replays, processed by PostHog in the EU. Replays only record while the app is open. They hide what you type and every image, but other text on screen, such as venue names and your saved plans, can appear in them. Analytics events use a random analytics ID, not your name or email; a few events our servers send, such as a reminder being delivered, use your device or account ID instead.
Permissions we ask for
- Location, "Allow all the time". So newt can notice venue visits even when the app is closed. It's used only for venue geofencing.
- Motion and fitness (iOS) / Physical activity (Android). So the phone can tell whether you're moving or still, and venue detection only wakes up when you're actually moving, which saves battery. This is read on your phone to gate detection; the app doesn't send motion or activity data to us.
- Notifications. For a quick "How's the vibe?" check while you're at a venue, a reminder an hour before something you saved, and news about fresh offers and app updates. Every notification is sent from our servers, and you can turn each kind off in the app's Settings.
- Photos (only when you share). To save or share a night-out card image when you ask to.
If you allow location only while using the app, or deny it, newt still works for browsing what's on. Only the automatic visit detection is turned off.
This website
newt.beer uses no cookies and no advertising or cross-site tracking. It is hosted by Vercel, which also counts page views for us with Vercel Web Analytics: the page, the referring site, and your country, browser, operating system and device type. It sets no cookies and stores no IP address; visits are told apart by a hash that resets every day, so we can't recognise you from one day to the next. To show tonight's offers, your browser fetches public venue and offer listings from our backend (Convex), and the page loads its fonts from Google Fonts. Like any web server, those services see your IP address for the request.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep visit, save, plan and account records while you use the app so we can show your history. Analytics and diagnostic data is kept for up to 12 months.
Delete your account
In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. Or on the web, signed in with the same Google or Apple account.
Your sign-in ends straight away. Your account details and everything stored against it (visits, saves, plans and votes, crowd checks, stamps, notification details, feedback and bug reports) are erased within minutes. We don't keep anonymised copies of your visits. The app also resets its analytics ID, and older analytics events expire within 12 months. Email us if you want them erased sooner.
Without an account, newt only knows your anonymous device ID. Delete the data tied to it yourself in the app: Settings → Account → Delete my data. Newt then starts fresh on your phone with a new ID. You can also email us. Uninstalling the app removes the ID and everything stored on your phone.
Your choices and rights
- Turn location off, or limit it to while using the app, in your phone's settings for newt.
- Turn individual notification types off in the app's Settings, or all notifications in your phone's settings.
- Keep using newt without an account. Signing in is optional.
- Delete your account and its data yourself, as described above.
- Delete the data tied to your anonymous device ID yourself, in the app (Settings → Account → Delete my data).
- Ask for a copy of your data, or for deletion of the data tied to your anonymous device ID, by emailing contact@newt.beer.
As an Australian business we handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles. Where it applies, for example to data PostHog processes in the EU, we also support access and erasure requests under the GDPR.
Children
newt features venues that serve alcohol and is meant for people aged 18 and over. It isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
